Handicapping Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs is a one-mile dirt oval with a long, demanding stretch — roughly 1,230 feet from the top of the lane to the wire, one of the longer runs home in American racing. That stretch length rewards horses that finish, and it's why deep closers can still get up here even when the early pace isn't collapsing. The seven-furlong Matt Winn turf course set inside handles a full menu of grass sprints and routes.
The spring meet — late April into early July — is some of the deepest racing in the country, with Derby and Oaks preps drawing full, contentious fields, which means bigger prices and more pace pressure to exploit. Our angle: respect tactical speed that can secure a forward position, but never automatically toss a proven closer, because the long stretch gives them room to run. Fall racing centers on the Grade 1 Clark for older horses.
How we handicap Churchill
Rating Model
Our proprietary model scores every horse entered at Churchill by projected win probability — independent of the morning line.
Pace Scenarios
We map out the pace shape of every race — who's going to the lead, where the pressure comes from, and which runners benefit from the expected tempo.
Surface & Trip Notes
Churchill Downs runs on Dirt and Turf. We track bias patterns and trip notes from prior starts to find hidden form.
Value Ratings
Every pick is benchmarked against the morning line. We only flag plays where our probability meaningfully exceeds the market — real overlays, not chalk.
