The Whitney is Saratoga's marquee race for older dirt horses — a Grade 1 at a mile and an eighth, traditionally run on the first Saturday of August on the day that carries its name. It's one of the oldest and most prestigious handicaps in the country, named for the Whitney family that helped build American racing, and it routinely crowns the summer's top older-horse.

Where the Travers reconvenes the three-year-olds, the Whitney is the grown-ups' race: proven, hard-knocking Grade 1 horses at the peak of their careers, going a serious distance over a demanding surface.

In recent years the Whitney has been one of the most important pointers on the calendar toward the Breeders' Cup Classic in the fall. Short, classy fields mean the exotics pay less and the win/exacta becomes the sharper play. Convert the morning line to implied probability, and if the favorite is a deserving standout, look to beat it only when the price on a live alternative is genuinely generous.
