The Puma Is Out
On the morning of May 2 โ race day for the 152nd Kentucky Derby โ The Puma, trained by Gustavo Delgado and scheduled to be ridden by Javier Castellano from Post 9, was scratched from the race. The official Kentucky Derby website now lists him as SCR with no reason given. Details are sparse, which is often the case with same-day morning scratches at Churchill Downs.
This is a significant development for anyone who built their tickets around our analysis. The Puma was our primary value pick at 10-1 โ a horse we believed was underpriced given the pace setup, the Post 9 draw, and Castellano's ability to find a ground-saving trip from mid-pack. Whatever the reason for the scratch, the result is the same: he won't be on the track at 6:57 PM ET tonight.

By Essential Quality โ himself a Kentucky Derby winner (2021) and a Horse of the Year โ out of Eve of War, The Puma carried an exceptional pedigree into this race. His race record was equally compelling: a win in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 7 by ยพ length at 7-1, and then a Florida Derby runner-up finish by a nose to Commandment on March 28.
That Florida Derby result was the basis for what we called the Mage/Sovereignty pattern: both Mage (2023) and Sovereignty (2025) finished second in the Florida Derby before winning the Kentucky Derby. The Puma replicated that exact trip โ pressing Commandment to a nose in Gulfstream's classic prep โ and had all the hallmarks of a horse primed to improve at Churchill Downs.
"Post 9 is a gift. Castellano is one of the best big-race riders in the sport and will find the ideal stalking trip from mid-pack. The Puma's closing style sets up perfectly if the early pace gets contested." โ Our pre-race analysis
Four Scratches, No Replacements Left
This is the fourth Derby scratch of the week:
- Silent Tactic (Mark Casse) โ scratched April 29, bruised foot โ Great White (Post 21) draws in
- Fulleffort (Brad Cox) โ scratched April 30, ankle bone chip โ Ocelli (Post 20) draws in
- Right to Party (Kenny McPeek) โ scratched May 1, cannon bone concern โ Robusta (Post 5) draws in
- The Puma (Gustavo Delgado) โ scratched May 2, reason TBD โ no replacement
With all three also-eligible horses (Great White, Ocelli, and Robusta) already in the main field, there is no replacement. The field drops from 20 to 19 horses for the 152nd running.
What It Means for Our Tickets
The Puma's scratch changes the structure of our exotic wager recommendations. Here's how we're adjusting:
Win Bet
Our top win bet remains Commandment (Post 6, 6-1). That hasn't changed. The Puma's scratch eliminates a value-oriented win target, but the top of the ticket is unchanged.
Exacta
With The Puma out, we lean on Commandment over Further Ado as the primary Exacta play, with Emerging Market as a secondary underneath Commandment. The Brad Cox two-horse dynamic becomes even more central to our strategy.
Trifecta
We were keying The Puma underneath Commandment in several trifecta combinations. With him removed, we fold in Chief Wallabee (Post 12, 8-1) and Emerging Market (Post 15, 15-1) as the most logical replacements. Both have the pace profile and draw to finish in the top three.
Superfecta
The deep combinations are least affected. Golden Tempo (Post 19, 30-1) becomes our primary dark horse anchor in the fourth position โ he was already in our deep Superfecta tickets, and The Puma's absence only reinforces his role.
Updated Handicapping Order
Commandment (Post 6) tops the ticket. Further Ado (Post 18) is the pace-free closer who gets better with every scratch. Emerging Market (Post 15) is the live value play now that The Puma is out. Golden Tempo (Post 19, 30-1) anchors the deep combinations. Post time 6:57 PM ET on NBC and Peacock.
