Opening Thoughts
Tuesday brings us a loaded slate across four tracks, stretching from the Ohio Valley out to the Arizona desert and through the Oklahoma plains. We’ve got everything from rock-bottom claiming sprints to a stakes race worth a look, so let’s break it all down track by track and find the spots worth playing.
Mahoning Valley Race Course
Youngstown, Ohio | First post 12:15 PM ET
Race 1 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $4,000 | Fillies & Mares, 3 & Up
A modest opener on the bottom of the claiming ladder, but there’s a clear standout at the top of the morning line. Right Trappe (PP 2, 2/1) heads this field and has the projection edge over the field. Right alongside her is Maureenlovesfrank (PP 1, 5/2), who figures to be in the mix throughout. Blazing Zenna (PP 3, 3/1) rounds out the logical win contenders, while the rest of the field falls off noticeably.
Bet: Exacta box 1-2, with Right Trappe on top in singles.
Race 2 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Allowance | Statebred, 3 & Up
A terrific betting puzzle — three horses are virtually deadlocked at the top of the projections: Bumpkin (PP 2, 9/2), Judy’s Comet (PP 3, 2/1), and Mark My Words (PP 1, 8/5). All three project identically. Bumpkin actually carries the best non-speed edge of the trio. Mark My Words is the morning line favorite and will attract the most money, making Bumpkin the potential overlay. The field falls off sharply after the top three.
Bet: Trifecta box 1-2-3. If you want a single, Bumpkin at 9/2 is the value play.
Race 3 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, 3 & Up
She’s So Sexy (PP 6, 2/1) heads this field decisively and brings a solid non-speed edge to boot. Below her sits a cluster of four horses — Fiveminutsofpasion (PP 2), Canadian Bear (PP 7), My Kathryn Rose (PP 5), and Fair Trade (PP 1) — that are tightly bunched. Canadian Bear is a sneaky play at 5/2 given the clustering below She’s So Sexy.
Bet: She’s So Sexy to win. Exacta: 6 over 2/7/5.
Race 4 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $5,000 | 3 & Up
Ernie’s Martini (PP 2, 7/2) heads this eight-horse field with a clear projection advantage and the best non-speed edge in the race. Air Show (PP 6, 2/1) is the morning line favorite but checks in a notch below. Versatile (PP 1, 3/1) is third in line. This race sets up well for Ernie’s Martini at a playable price — a prime overlay situation.
Bet: Ernie’s Martini to win and in exactas. Key him on top: 2 over 6/1.
Race 5 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $15,000 | Statebred, 3 & Up
Knock Wood (PP 7, 5/2) tops this nine-horse field with a solid edge and a positive non-speed edge. Paint the Town (PP 1, 3/1) is right there as the main rival. Below them, Man’s Choice (PP 6, 7/2) and Wasabi Beach (PP 3, 8/1) are deadlocked. Wasabi Beach at 8/1 deserves consideration in exotics.
Bet: Exacta 7-1. Trifecta 7/1 over 6/3.
Race 6 — 5.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $15,000 | Fillies & Mares, 3 & Up
A Little Canela (PP 3, 2/1) is the class of this field and leads on both projection and non-speed merits — a powerful combination. Big Ginger (PP 8, 6/1) is a strong second and represents legitimate value if you want to take a shot in exotics. Hartful Hope (PP 1, 5/2) rounds out the top three.
Bet: A Little Canela to win. Exacta 3 over 8/1.
Race 7 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Allowance | Statebred, 3 & Up
The standout race of the day at MVR. Deterrent (PP 6, 3/5) is a powerhouse — projecting 18 points clear of the field and carrying the best non-speed score on the card by a wide margin. At 3/5 there’s no win value, but he anchors every exotic.
Bet: Use Deterrent underneath in the Pick 3. In the race itself, wheel him underneath in trifectas for a small return. Professor Nick (PP 5, 6/1) and Soup Today (PP 1, 8/1) battle for the place.
Race 8 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Allowance | 3 & Up
The finale is a full nine-horse field with real depth. Panthera’s Fate (PP 2, 4/1) holds the top projection spot and brings a positive non-speed score. Romanian Prince (PP 1, 3/1) is the morning line second choice and runs second in projections. More Than Five (PP 9, 5/1) is a sneaky third with a neutral non-speed edge and a price worth considering. The top three separate from the rest.
Bet: Exacta box 2-1. Trifecta: 2/1/9 with coverage underneath.
Parx Racing
Bensalem, Pennsylvania | First post 12:40 PM ET
Race 1 — 8.32 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, 4 & Up
Battling Time (PP 4, 3/1) heads this field and is backed by a positive non-speed edge. Reina Mar (PP 6, 4/1) is second with an even better non-speed number. The trio of Zoning Order, Everheart, and You Know Me all project identically and well below the top two. Interesting that Reina Mar actually shows a stronger non-speed edge than the top projection horse — worth noting.
Bet: Exacta box 4-6.
Race 2 — 8.32 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | 4 & Up
Jungle Glow (PP 3, 8/5) is the clear leader here and comes with the best non-speed score in the race — a significant edge. The morning line favorite at a short price, but he checks every box. Union Purrfection (PP 2, 4/1) is second and offers some value in the exacta.
Bet: Jungle Glow to win. Exacta 3-2.
Race 3 — 6.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, 4 & Up
A tighter affair. American Peaches (PP 2, 5/1) leads the projections despite a negative non-speed score. Sweet Distraction (PP 5, 9/2) is just behind with the best non-speed edge in the race — and at a competitive price, she’s the value angle here. Sister Marjorie (PP 6, 2/1) is the public’s pick but falls below both in projections.
Bet: Sweet Distraction to win. Exacta 5-2.
Race 4 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, 4 & Up
This is a short field with modest projections overall. Fifty Nine Fifty (PP 2, 6/5) leads as the heavy favorite. Spanish Girl (PP 4, 6/1) is within striking distance and offers value in the exacta.
Bet: Fifty Nine Fifty to win. Exacta 2-4.
Race 5 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Starter Optional Claiming $16,000 | 4 & Up
Vix (PP 7, 3/1) heads this field and carries a positive non-speed edge to match. Sams After Party (PP 5, 5/2) is right there in second and may be the better play at a slightly tighter price. Centaur Central (PP 6, 6/1) is a contender in exotics.
Bet: Exacta box 7-5. Vix to win.
Race 6 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | 4 & Up
The best race on the Parx card. Backside Buzz (PP 1, 7/2) leads on projections and carries the highest non-speed score in the field — a compelling combination. Midlaner (PP 3, 3/1) and Young Squire (PP 9, 5/1) are legitimate threats. The field has real depth through the top four or five — this looks like a genuine multi-horse race.
Bet: Trifecta box 1/3/9. Backside Buzz to win at 7/2 is solid value.
Race 7 — 8.32 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | 4 & Up
A fascinating top of the field. New Commission (PP 8, 9/2) projects highest with a strong non-speed score, but It’s Game Time (PP 4, 3/1) is just a whisker back with an identical non-speed edge. B B Bad (PP 3, 6/1) is third with a positive non-speed score as well. All three of the top horses bring positive non-speed numbers — a rare and interesting pattern.
Bet: Trifecta box 8/4/3. It’s Game Time may be slightly short — New Commission at 9/2 is the value.
Race 8 — 7 Furlongs Dirt | Starter Optional Claiming $25,000 | 4 & Up
Tavern Time (PP 3, 2/1) leads here with a positive non-speed edge. Nantucket (PP 2, 5/2) is right behind. These two separate from the field.
Bet: Exacta 3-2.
Race 9 — 6.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $25,000 | Fillies & Mares, 4 & Up
Always Laughing (PP 1, 6/1) leads on projections and carries the best non-speed score in the race. The morning line is not high on her, making this a potential overlay. Miss Easy (PP 8, 5/1) is second and also shows a strong non-speed edge. Mildoon (PP 7, 6/1) rounds out the top three.
Bet: Always Laughing is a strong win play at 6/1. Exacta 1-8. Trifecta 1/8/7.
Race 10 — 8.32 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $5,000 | 4 & Up
The Parx finale features a big field. Hatch (PP 7, 6/1) heads the projections and carries by far the best non-speed score in the race. Rerally (PP 12, 9/2) is second with a strong non-speed number as well. Balantyne (PP 6, 4/1) completes the top three.
Bet: Hatch at 6/1 is the value play. Exacta 7-12. Trifecta 7/12/6.
Turf Paradise
Phoenix, Arizona | First post 2:15 PM MT
Race 3 — Approx. 7.5 Furlongs Turf | Maiden Special Weight | 3-Year-Olds
An open maiden affair on the turf for juveniles. Cozmic Brownie (PP 6, 6/1) leads the projections with a slight non-speed edge. Flight Ryder (PP 1, 5/1) and Higher Performance (PP 5, 6/1) are close behind and project almost identically. Rocky Colavito (PP 3, 5/2) is a curiosity — the morning line second choice but projects well below the top horses. He brings the best non-speed score in the field, however, which makes him worth including in exotics.
Bet: Cozmic Brownie to win. Trifecta 6/1/5 with Rocky Colavito as a saver.
Race 4 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Maiden Claiming $8,500 | 3 & Up
Hugh Glass (PP 6, 5/2) takes the top spot here and carries the best non-speed edge in the race. West Is West (PP 7, 4/1) is second. The rest of the field falls off sharply, particularly Money Mitch (PP 2, 9/5) who checks in fifth despite being the morning line favorite. Hugh Glass looks like a prime overlay.
Bet: Hugh Glass to win. Exacta 6-7.
Race 5 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Allowance Optional Claiming $12,500 | 4 & Up
You’reinthearmynow (PP 1, 6/5) leads this allowance field comfortably and carries a positive non-speed score. Hit Scene (PP 2, 8/1) is second with a solid non-speed number as well, and at 8/1 is the value in the exotics. Speed Grazy (PP 6) and I’m Noble (PP 3) are deadlocked for third.
Bet: You’reinthearmynow to win. Exacta 1-2, with Hit Scene representing strong exacta value at 8/1.
Race 6 — 6.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $4,000 | 4 & Up
The headliner at Turf Paradise today. Pop d’Oro (PP 8, 1/1) is an absolute standout — projecting 11 points clear of the field and carrying by far the best non-speed score on the TUP card today. At even money there’s no win value, but he’s your banker for all multi-leg wagers. Goddard (PP 2, 3/1) is the clear second.
Bet: Use Pop d’Oro as a single in Pick 3s and Pick 4s. Exacta 8-2 for a small ticket.
Race 7 — Approx. 8 Furlongs Turf | Allowance Optional Claiming $50,000 | 3-Year-Old Fillies
A small but intriguing field of six fillies on the turf. Love That Witch (PP 3, 6/1) leads the projections and brings a positive non-speed edge. Playful (PP 4, 2/1) is second and is the public’s pick, but projects noticeably below the leader. Fourlynnes (PP 1, 8/1) rounds out the top three.
Bet: Love That Witch at 6/1 looks like the value. Exacta 3-4.
Race 8 — 6.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $4,000 | 4 & Up
A tight finale. Halo Uncle (PP 4, 5/1) and Slew Skies (PP 8, 5/1) share the top projection spot exactly, just edging out Bedrock (PP 1, 7/2) and Roll Dem Bones (PP 2, 9/2). This is a wide-open race that begs for exotics coverage.
Bet: Trifecta box 4/8/1/2 for a 12-combination ticket.
Will Rogers Downs
Claremore, Oklahoma | First post 1:15 PM CT
Race 1 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Maiden Special Weight | Fillies & Mares, 3 & Up
Joyful Image (PP 3, 3/1) leads this maiden opener with a positive non-speed edge. Grand Circle (PP 4, 3/1) and Protocol (PP 2, 7/2) are closely matched below her, while Classical Echo (PP 1, 5/2) is the morning line second pick but checks in fifth — a potential fade.
Bet: Joyful Image to win. Exacta 3-4.
Race 2 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | 3 & Up
Sand Creek (PP 6, 6/1) tops the projections despite being the longest price in the top half of the field — an immediate overlay alert. Work Zone (PP 7, 2/1) is second and is the public’s choice. Butchy Boy (PP 4, 5/1) rounds out the top three.
Bet: Sand Creek at 6/1 is the value. Exacta 6-7.
Race 3 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Statebred, 3 & Up
Warhammer (PP 3, 2/1) is the standout here — leading on projections and carrying the best non-speed edge in the race by a significant margin. Chi Town Road (PP 1, 5/2) is a clear second. The field falls off sharply after the top two.
Bet: Warhammer to win. Exacta 3-1.
Race 4 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Maiden Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, Statebred, 3 & Up
This field projects at modest levels throughout — typical of a maiden claiming bottom. So Whatro (PP 7, 5/2) leads. Osage Express (PP 5, 3/1) is second and carries the best non-speed edge in the field. Aroa (PP 1, 2/1) is the morning line favorite but checks third — another potential value play against the chalk.
Bet: Exacta box 7-5. Osage Express to win.
Race 5 — 8 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $7,500 | Fillies & Mares, 3 & Up
Caleb’s Finest (PP 2, 5/2) is one of the most dominant plays of the day at Will Rogers — leading the field and carrying the highest non-speed score by a country mile. Cloud Angel (PP 5, 4/1) is second. Gospel Fabulous (PP 4, 3/1) and Inner Fury (IRE) (PP 6, 2/1) are closely matched below them.
Bet: Caleb’s Finest to win. Exacta 2-5.
Race 6 — 5.5 Furlongs Dirt | Maiden Claiming $15,000 | Fillies & Mares, Statebred, 3 & Up
Saddle Mountain (PP 4, 5/1) and Surely Swift (PP 5, 2/1) share the top projection spot exactly. Surely Swift is the morning line favorite, but Saddle Mountain at 5/1 offers the value. The rest of the field projects well below.
Bet: Exacta box 4-5. Saddle Mountain for the upset.
Race 7 — 5.5 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $15,000 | Fillies & Mares, 4 & Up
Stormy’s Revenge (PP 4, 5/2) and Calebs Lady (PP 6, 3/1) share the top projection exactly and both carry a positive non-speed edge. This is a genuine pick ’em between two horses. Business as Usual (PP 7, 6/1) is a clear third.
Bet: Exacta box 4-6. Trifecta 4/6 over 7.
Race 8 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Welder Stakes | 3-Year-Old Statebreds
The marquee race of the day at Will Rogers — a $50,000 stakes (boosted to $75,000 with Oklahoma Bred Program money) for three-year-old statebreds. Royalamerican (PP 6, 2/1) is the clear standout, leading the projections and carrying the best non-speed score in the race. Drewtonian (PP 2, 3/1) is the main rival, projecting clearly second. Western Man (PP 7, 7/2) rounds out the top three but is well below the top two.
Bet: Royalamerican to win. Exacta 6-2.
Race 9 — 6 Furlongs Dirt | Claiming $5,000 | 4 & Up
Speight and Malice (PP 5, 5/2) wraps up the WRD card leading the field with a strong non-speed edge. Good Scout (PP 4, 7/2) is second. Dancing Devil (PP 6, 8/1) is a value play in the exotics — projecting third but going off at an attractive price.
Bet: Speight and Malice to win. Exacta 5-4. Trifecta 5/4/6.
